What happens if your hotel is robbed?

When you're on holiday, the last thing you think about is being robbed in your hotel. But what if it happens? Do you know what to do? Today we'll tell you all about it!

When you go on holiday and you choose the place where you will be staying, you must take into account that you choose the most suitable place to make your stay as comfortable as possible, but also that it is a safe place where your personal belongings are properly guarded.

Who is responsible if you are robbed in the hotel?

Taking into account the Civil Code, the accommodation is responsible for the objects deposited, as long as the travellers have informed the hotel of the effects introduced and that they comply with the precautions regarding care and vigilance that have been indicated to them. They are excluded from responsibility when they are the result of armed robbery or an event of force majeure.

Do you have to sign a document for the hotel to take responsibility for theft?

The liability of the establishment arises from the contractual relationship between the traveller and the establishment. It is not necessary to have previously signed a deposit contract, nor is it necessary for there to be a written acceptance by the hotel to be responsible for the damage or loss of the belongings brought in by the traveller.

What happens to items in hotel safety deposit boxes?

If the establishment has a safe deposit box or locker, it is already assumed that the hotelier assumes responsibility. It is a different matter whether the guest can prove what has been deposited in the safe deposit box and its value.

For this reason, it is advisable to pay attention to the establishment's instructions on the luggage storage and safety deposit box services that are indicated in the documents that are signed at check-in.

On the other hand, it is also advisable to ask the accommodation what the liability limit is for the objects deposited in the safe, as the liability could be limited to a value referenced to the cost of the stay per night.

What to do if your hotel is robbed?

If you suffer a robbery or theft in your accommodation, you should always report it to the establishment and also file a report at the police station or the duty court. As far as possible, it is advisable to have proof of the existence of the belongings and their value, such as photos, invoices, etc., which will make it easier to succeed. This will make it easier for you to win your right to compensation.

In any case, each case will have to be studied and analysed individually, so it is advisable never to leave valuables in the room and in plain view, use the security systems offered by the hotel, do not leave windows or balconies open if you leave the room and do not lose sight of your belongings in the common areas.
