7 Legal tips to prevent scams during the winter sales

We are still in the middle of the winter sales season, and let's be honest, who doesn't like buying their favourite item at half price? Even so, you need to be careful because this time of year sees an increase in scams, whether through misleading advertising or other means.

Today we are going to give you some tips so you don't get ripped off and can enjoy a safer and more pleasant shopping experience.

1. Check that discounts are clearly indicated.

Consumer regulations require that both the original price (the lowest price applied to the item in the 30 days prior to the promotion) and the discounted price are always visible, so we advise you to avoid buying if only a discount percentage is shown without a price reference.

2. Check the returns policy

Shops are obliged to clearly indicate their exchange and returns policy. When shopping online, consumers should bear in mind that they have 14 calendar days to withdraw from the purchase, without having to justify their decision. For purchases made in physical shops, returns vary depending on the shop's policy, except in the case of defective products. In this case, and if the shop has not properly informed the buyer about the condition of the product, the deadline for requesting a return could be extended to one year from the date of delivery.

3. Be wary of offers that seem too good to be true.

Experts point out that the most common scams involve products offered at suspiciously low prices and requests for payment via unsafe methods (transfers to third parties, cryptocurrencies, unofficial links, etc.).

4. Ask for an invoice or receipt of purchase.

This document is essential for enforcing warranties, returns, or claims. For online purchases, it is also recommended that you keep confirmation emails and screenshots of the product and its price.

5. Avoid accessing websites through unsafe or unreliable links.

Avoid clicking on suspicious links in emails, text messages, or websites. It is recommended that you type the URL of the retailer or brand directly into the browser bar.

6. Use secure payment methods

Prioritize card payments or platforms that offer buyer protection and, most importantly, avoid sharing bank details via email, messaging, or links sent by strangers.

7. Act quickly if you discover any fraud

In case of suspicion or fraud, it is important to contact your bank immediately to block payments or cards, save all the evidence collected, and file a report with the police or consumer authorities. If you need us to accompany you to file the report, please contact us.

"Sales are a great opportunity to shop smart, but unfortunately, they are also a time when unfair practices abound. We believe that staying informed is the best way to protect your rights as a consumer and ensure a smooth shopping experience. If you are a victim of fraud, it is important to seek legal recourse and report it to the appropriate authorities.
