Where should your parcels be delivered when you shop online?

Have you ever wondered what happens to your parcel when you're not at home? In this article, we reveal everything you need to know about receiving parcels when shopping online. According to the National Commission for Markets and Competition, in Spain there were over 493 million parcel deliveries linked to online commerce in just one quarter of 2025. No big deal!

Where should your parcels be delivered?

The convenience of shopping online is undeniable, but order delivery is a vital part of the process. By law, the courier company must deliver your purchase to the address you provided, and should never leave it at your door if you are not there, unless you have expressly authorised another option.

For example, if you know you will not be home, you can leave signed permission for your trusted neighbour or doorman to collect it. But if you have not done so and the courier leaves the parcel on your doormat... You have the option to complain.

What happens if the package purchased online is delivered to someone else?

It is legal for someone else to collect the package, but only with your express authorisation. Imagine that you are going to be at work and you ask your sister to collect it. In that case, you just need to inform the courier company or leave it in writing.

What should you do if there are problems with the delivery of your online purchase?

- Lost or undelivered package.

You must file a claim with the seller, not directly with the courier, because the shop is responsible until you receive your order.

- Parcel left at the door.

If you did not authorise this delivery, complain to the seller so that they can deal with the problem with the logistics company.

A practical example would be if Antonio bought a smartphone online and, as he was not at home, the courier left it at the front door. When he arrived, it was gone. Antonio complained to the shop and they sent him another one free of charge because it was his right.

Practical tips for receiving your online purchases safely

1. Check the condition of the package when you receive it. If you notice any dents or damage, take photos and open it in front of the courier if you can.

2. Notify the seller of any damage as soon as possible. It is important to do this without delay.

3. Make it clear in your orders if you authorise someone else to collect it for you.

4. Always keep your proof of purchase and delivery.

As a consumer, you have rights and shops are obliged to respond to any incidents. If you want to make a complaint to a shop because the item you bought did not arrive in good condition or was not delivered, please contact us.
